Nairobi city is popularly referred to as the green city in the sun and the Central Business District is the heart beat of the city. From humble beginnings in the late 1890s, Nairobi city has grown from a simple railroad depot on the railway linking Mombasa to Uganda, to become the 4th largest City in Africa, in terms of infrastructure development and size. The CBD resembles a concrete jungle, with tall, modern skyscrapers adorning the beautiful landscape overlooking the Central and Uhuru Park. Nairobi City is one of the few cities in the world that has spacious, recreational parks sitting next to office apartments. The bomb blast memorial park and the Jevanjee gardens lie within the CBD. A beautification project carried out two years ago, has made the CBD even greener by planting trees. The city centre is relatively clean with litter tins in most areas of CBD. Key landmarks include the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC), Times Tower (The tallest building in the city) and City Hall – the mayor’s office. The Nairobi Stock Exchange (NSE), the fourth largest stock exchange in Africa in terms of volume trading, is also housed within the CBD.

Location:The city is located at 1°17S 36°49E and is set almost in the middle between Kisumu andMombasa cities. The business district is boxed within the four main roads; Uhuru Highway, Haile Selassie Avenue, Moi Avenue and University Way.

Types of buildings:
Most buildings in the CBD are multi-storied buildings and skyscrapers. A stretch of tall buildings line up along Uhuru Highway, making the area prime for office location. The main street is Kenyatta Avenue, which runs from Uhuru Highway to Moi Avenue. The general post office, located at the Teleposta Towers, is along Kenyatta Avenue, and so is the magnificent I&M Bank towers. Parliament building and theKenyatta Mausoleum, along Parliament Road are worth visiting.

Security: 
The CBD area is relatively safe during the day but residents must be vigilante at night. However, the presence of the police headquarters and the central police station along University Way has helped keep petty crime at a low. There are also several CCTV cameras on major streets helping to curb crime.

Transport & road networks: 
Only specific buses are allowed to ply their trade within the CBD. This has helped decongest the city centre. However, the heart of the city encounters endless traffic jams as cars try to leave and enter the CBDthrough different exits.
